J. Matthew McInnis is Deputy Director of the Iran Action Group and Senior Advisor to the Special Representative for Iran at the U.S. Department of State. Previously he was the Member of the Policy Planning Staff at State Department covering Iran. Prior to his appointment at the Department, he was a Resident Fellow for four years at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) focusing on Middle East foreign and defense policy issues and authoring the monograph The Future of Iran’s Security Policy: Inside Tehran’s Strategic Thinking. Before joining AEI, Mr. McInnis served for fifteen years in the Department of Defense in senior intelligence and advisory roles on Iran, Iraq, the greater Middle East, counter proliferation and East Asia security issues. Most notably, he held the position of Senior Expert for Iran at US Central Command under Generals David Petraeus, John Allen, and James Mattis. Mr. McInnis holds a BA from Eckerd College, an MA from New York University, and an MA from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
